Cottage on the Lane

Yesterday I started to apply some of the lessons learned at the
Joyce Hicks workshop. There is a LOT! First taking a scene either photo or being there, editing, adding and making a  pencil value sketch. Something I've never done. Making it your own, your design, your color.  Yes, I took notes. LOL ! lots of notes, and actually following them. Doing a small color piece, then finally painting, but referring to that pencil value sketch over and over.
Of course this being my first serious attempt after the classes I missed most of it here, but some of it I DID get in.
Cooler lighter values in the distance, warmer, darker in front.
Balance, harmony, always thinking ahead of the brushstroke, where your going to place it and how.. Texture, warm against cool. Light against dark.  Using big brushes loaded with pigment and water. Go For IT!
I like this as I made it my own.!  I like the left side, especially behind the cottage,  but not the right.  Could have cropped it shorter, but then you lose that pathway that leads you in.  OK not perfect, but even though I may have only applied 3 or 4 of those learned lessons, I will eventually get to where it will be all of them (ALL in ONE painting.)  How good will that be??

  1. Joan, your workshop sounds wonderful and you really had lots of takeaways to apply to your painting. This is a lovely piece. I am always so impatient that I want to skip steps, like doing the value sketch. Then I am sorry I didn't do one as I slog my way through. This is a very nice piece!

    1. I'm impatient too. But when we do all the steps it really is easier in the long run.

  5. I think this is gorgeous, BJ. Not one thing wrong with it. I am reminded of the sheets hanging on the line when I was a kid...the freshness of them on the bed...

  7. Your workshop has certainly paid off. Love this painting. But gotta say BJ your work was excellent even before the workshop. There is so much to orchestrate in a painting, and so very much to remember. Thank you for sharing your tips. Looking forward to more of your work. One more thing, love the composition and colors. Really very, very, well done.

  8. Oh BJ - I think you learned a lot and it shows in this beautiful painting. It makes me want to follow the road to the house. The blue sky behind the cottage is so gorgeous. Just love it friend. I wouldn't change a thing. Take care and have a great day. Hugs!

  9. This painting looks very good. You seem to be really applying what you've learned from the workshop. But BJ as I may say, you are already very good even without the workshop. Good luck.

  10. Superb work BJ. I thought I'd commented on this before, but obviously not. It's an excellent landscape and I love the washing hanging on the line. I'm glad the workshop was all you'd hoped it would be. ;-)
